Dr. Nusbaum began his surgical career at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in early 1998.read more Dr. Deborah Abeles, M.D.  is board certified in general surgery. She obtained a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and an M.D. from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. She performed her general surgery residency at Tufts Medical Center (Boston, MA). It was during this time she became interested in bariatric and metabolic surgery. As a result, Dr. Abeles continued her training at Tufts Medical Center, where she served as a fellow in advanced laparoscopic general and bariatric surgery.

Dr. Abeles’ clinical activity focuses on minimally invasive approaches to bariatric and metabolic surgery; including laparoscopy, single incision laparoscopy, incisionless revisional surgery and endoscopic stapling devices.  read more

ASMBS CENTER OF EXCELLENCE

Drs. Nusbaum and Abeles are pleased to announce that he has been granted the "Center of Excellence" designation by The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery continuously since 2005. This designation is specifically designed to help a patient find both a qualified Bariatric surgeon and a qualified Bariatric hospital. There is an extensive approval process that includes reviews of the surgeon's case load and complications as well as a rigorous evaluation of the quality of the program provided. This designation was bestowed upon both our practice and the Saint Barnabas Medical Center Bariatric Program by The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

HISTORY OF OTCNJ

At the Obesity Treatment Centers of New Jersey, we offer both surgical and non-surgical options for weight loss. The Laparoscopic Bariatric Program at Saint Barnabas Medical Center was started by Dr. Nusbaum back in 2000. In 2002, Dr. Michael Nusbaum started the Obesity and Weight Management Center of The Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center. In conjunction, we are able to offer Nutritionists, Dietitians, Metabolic Specialists, Cooking Classes, Exercise Physiologists, Massage Therapy as well as surgical options such as Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass and Laparoscopic Gastric Banding procedures.  As of January 2008, we are pleased to offer the "REALIZE" gastric banding in addition to the "LAP-BAND" gastric banding system.

We have support group meetings every two weeks and have meetings specifically for Pre-op patients, Post-op patients, Long Term (more than one year) Post-op patients, and now a group specifically for Lap Band patients. FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR METABOLIC AND BARIATRIC SURGERY

As of May of 2008, Dr. Nusbaum was named a Fellow of the American Society For Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.  He was among the FIRST group in the country for whom this honor was bestowed.  As a Fellow of our society, his duty is to uphold the high standards, quality of care and represent the honor of the ASMBS.

BARIATRIC SURGERY PROGRAM AT MORRISTOWN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

After starting the program in St. Barnabas back in 2000, Dr. Nusbaum was asked to revamp and restart the program at Morristown Memorial.  In 2008, Morristown Memorial Hospital asked Dr. Nusbaum to help them create a state of the art Weight Loss and Bariatric Program.  The concept was to combine the "Duke Weight Loss Clinic" with the "Canyon Ranch Spa" and create the "Mayo Clinic" of Weight Loss in the NY TriState area.  The result is: The Metabolic Medicine and Weight Control Center at Morristown Memorial (The Weight & Wellness Center of Atlantic Health).  This center provides options for those who need to lose 10lbs or 210lbs or more.  As the Medical Director of the Weight Control Center, Dr. Nusbaum encourages all patients to take advantage of the outstanding services this new center has to offer.  Please contact our offices or MMH for more information.

Morristown Memorial has been awarded the 2010 Bariatric Center of Excellence by Health Grades.  Only two bariatric programs in NJ were granted this honor.
